Digital Collage

I always was spending a lot of time reproducing my work, and once that process went digital, I couldn't let more creative opportunity pass me by. With image editing software, you can do some nifty things to your own work, and since its non-destructive to the original work, it extends the life of the original and creates a different image that's not a copy, but not entirely original either, but a representation that's different if its seen illuminated as it was made or printed as it would be exist visibly in the analogue world.

Here's another Digital Collage using Photoshop to transform collage.

This one diverges from the original more.

This time the Digital Collage is kept more in a graphic form of transformation.

It's much more photographic this way. Done with Photoshop too.

This time the Digital Collage is used to create a plan for a painting. I took a picture of the fabric pattern I was planning on painting on as a surface and played with the image that became the plan for the painting. Done with Photoshop too. This strategy can be used to plan things out visually in your works and allow you to be more confident in your artistic process by showing you non-destructive options to your process choices.

Digital Drawing and Collage Programs:

A great free alternative to Photoshop is Pixlr and Gimp. I feel Pixlr is easier and more fun to use, but Gimp is a closer imitation of Photoshop. Procreate is an awesome and inexpensive iPad app good for digital painting. It is harder to do direct transformation/manipulation of an imported picture, but doable too. Super great for free-hand drawing/painting.
